Covid-19 has changed all our lives. I am thankful that I have remained well, but long to return to normal activities like visiting with friends and family, and travelling for art and pleasure.
While self-isolating in Port Hope I have been working in my studio daily. In 2020 I produced Other Echoes, a collection of works on paper examining home and memory.
Early in 2021 I completed the Canadian part of The Tangled Garden a large, long-term garden wall project. Hopefully in the future I will have the opportunity to travel and develop the imagined two remaining walls.
My annual summer canoe trip with the other artists of the Gibson Girls, was cancelled and our exhibition in Vilnius, Lithuania was postponed until 2022. The mail art exchange project we were to exhibit, Where I'm at Now: A Conversation in Art has continued and provided some solace and connection. Mexico
I was in Mexico from November 2023 until early April 2024 where I walked beaches early in the morning, worked in my garden until mid-day and in my studio each afternoon.

Mexican Garden Screens
Mexican domestic gardens are largely grown for shade and privacy with decorative elements added to support and further define the space. I have slowly worked towards this in my own garden in what was once a few goats penned on a bare rock strewn hill. Larger rocks terrace the property now with smaller ones often used for pathways and bed definition. There is shade where there was once none. Many plants have come and gone over the years as I’ve learned to plant species that can withstand water limitations, insect infestations and disease.
The shape and warmth of this handmade Japanese Mura Hoban paper has always suggested to me time and the long view. Much like a garden, the paper has been worked over for many years. In 2019 I began by referencing a timeless collection of Oaxacan vessels which provided the structure for what followed. I lived with these images for several years before seeing them as an integral part of a garden. Returning to Mexico post-covid I added the plant-referenced decorative screening that is influenced by so many seen in Oaxaca. This winter as I was concentrating on new drawings of leaf forms, light and shadow, I decided to complete this work with a layer referencing the Jasmines screening my view of the neighbour’s wall behind my studio.
